![]() What Is Inhalant Abuse? Inhalant abuse refers to the deliberate concentration and inhalation (or sniffing) of vapors and gases from common products found in homes, schools, and communities. Inhalants are easily accessible and legal for their intended purpose. When used as intended by following directions, these products are safe and useful. But when intentionally misused, they can be deadly--inhalants can kill the first time or anytime. This is because these products are all poisons, and fire and explosion hazzards. Inhalant Abuse is an often unrecognized form of substance abuse, but it is no less dangerous. Inhalants are addictive and are considered to be "gateway" drugs because inhalants are often the first 'drug' that children will try. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that one in five American teens have used Inhalants as if it were a drug. |
